My Route 66 Road Trip 2019 “kicks” off at the End of the Trail where Route 66 ends on the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California.

Route 66: books for kids

Here’s the Santa Monica Pier in the distance with the Pacific Ocean in the background. I took this photo from the bluff overlooking the Pier and beyond. At this point, my sister, Gail, and I were really excited to find the Pier entrance.

Santa Monica Pier: Children Books

We walked along a crowded sidewalk and around a bunch of trees to arrive at the Pier Entrance. We strolled under it and joined a crowd of folks heading down the hill toward the Ferris wheel and the Pier’s end.

Route 66: Books set in the 50s

Finally, after getting crushed by the crowd we found the Route 66 End of the Trail sign along with hundreds of other folks! Our new friend Francisco from Mexico is pointing up to the sign looking as excited as we did! Even though I wrote about Route 66 in my historical fiction chapter books for 8 and up about the 1950s, and I’d driven on the Mother Road over the years, I’d never made it to this spot!
